How to tell ? Who is The Really Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon in Eugene, Oregon

This should be a easy way to find out ! Ask, Ask and Ask !!! Do not fully on internet ! One of the surgeon marketing tools is to advertise on the internet ! Therefore, this may be a "trap" !!!

Who to ask !
1. Your physicain ! These can be your family MD or call the surgeon office
2. Nurses ! I am sure someone know someone who know a nurse in Sacred Heart Medical Center.

What to ask !
1. Is your surgeon fellowship trained in laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgery ?
This is perhaps the most important questions. If you are looking for a advanced laparoscopic surgeon..... it only make sense if they have some training.

Formal training in laparoscopic surgery takes between 1 to 2 years.

Taking a 3 days courses in laparoscopic surgery does not make one a laparoscopic surgeon !!!

2. What do they mean by advanced laparoscopic surgery.
Laparoscopic appendectomy (removal of appendix), laparoscopic cholecystectomy ( removal of gallbladder) and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair are bread and butter general surgery. Therefore DOES NOT qualify as advanced laparoscopic surgery.

The real laparoscopic surgeon should be able to do laparoscopic colon resection. This is for a just-beyong-beginner laparoscopic surgeon. Should not be classify as advanced laparoscopic surgeon.

The true advanced laparoscopic surgeon should be able to repair, remove and reconstruct any organ structures in the abdomen. For this, they should be able to tight knot inside the abdomen quickly. For example.

Laparoscopic Gastrectomy: The surgeon need to remove part of the stomach and then reconnect another part of intestine to the rest of the stomach to make sure food can go down !

Laparoscopic Esophagectomy: This is perhaps one of the most difficult operation for intestine. Only the advanced laparoscopic surgeon can have the skill to deal with the technical aspect of laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic Liver Resection: Due to high bleeding risk, not only the surgeon need to be a super advanced laparoscopic surgeon but also a hepatobiliary (surgeon specialised in liver surgery) surgeon.

Is My Surgeon a Real Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon ?

The truth is the surgical community knows that the future of surgery in the abdomen will be dominated by laparoscopic approach rather than the "old" open approach.

The truth is also, the patients are getting more well read and well educated about their disease process and treatment options including surgical intervention. If the patients has spend some time reading about their surgical treatment. It is very likely they will discover that "May be" or Very-likely" they can be done through a laparoscopic surgery approach.

Therefore, most surgeons want to position themselve to be able to deal with the patients search for a laparoscopic surgeon. Therefore, if we look around: Almost very surgeons called themselves laparoscopic surgeon. Even worst, they called advertised themselves as "advanced laparoscopic surgeon".

There are no guideline when a surgeon can called themselves a advanced laparoscopic surgeon.

Look around and ask around for surgeons in San Francisco ! There are too many who called themselves advanced laparoscopic surgeon. BUT only a few can really do an advanced laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgery in San Francisco

Recovery from Minimally Invasive Surgery or Laparoscopic Surgery, Eugene, Oregon

The recovery from laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgery depends on the following factors

1. Number of Incisions.
In general, the fewer the incisions, the faster the recovery.

2. Size of Incision
In general, each laparoscopic incision is 5 to 1.5 cm. Sometime, the incision has to be enlarge to removed a specimen.
Therefore, the smaller the incision, the faster the recovery !

3. The type of general anesthesia.
If patient has problem with the anesthesia, regardless the type of surgery, the patients will recover faster if he or she has no problem withn the anesthesia. Older patients with medical comorbidity are more likely to wake up slower compared to younger healtheir patients.

4. Which oragn system is being operated on ?
Common surgery like: Laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair: Patients tend to recover quicker.

Laparoscopic bowel surgery: Laparoscopic colectomy, laparoscopic small bowel resection: will usually require few days of hospital stays.

Laparoscopic foregut surgery: Laparoscopic fundoplication, laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair: usually performed as a out patient procedure or 24 hrs hospital stays.

Laparoscopic esophagectomy: will required at least 5 to 7 days of hospital stays to ensure that the anastomosis is OK.

Laparoscopic pancreas surgery and laparoscopic liver surgery: Not many surgeon can do this !, not even all laparoscopic surgeron can do this. This is a procedure that required a highly skill laparoscopic surgeon with special interest in hepatobiliary surgery ( liver and pancreas surgery) to perform.
